Rocks
Producer/
Remixer / Club & Mixshow DJ
Weekdays 12 noon and Friday’s 10pm - 12 midnight
Johnny
Rocks was born in
Queens
,
New York
and now resides in
Manhattan
. Johnny’s parents were both
entertainers; his father having a Big Band Orchestra and mother singing lead
vocals.
Johnny
has always collected and had a fascination with music. He first got his start on
college radio. While actively promoting public and private dance parties on and
off campus, Johnny set his sights on becoming a club DJ.
In
1983 he got his first club job at the popular "Fudgies Too"
discotheque in
Westchester
however, it was not as a DJ. Johnny
had to work his way up, starting out as a doorman.
Four months later, he finally found his way to the DJ booth. First
though, Johnny had to become the light man for the DJ and after 4 months of
learning lights, he went on to become the VJ (Video Jock).
Johnny had his own video show every Friday and Saturday night before the
DJ went on. Johnny orchestrated and
was a part of the newest craze in New York Nightclubs, “Video”.
Finally, in June of 1984, Johnny got his chance to mix vinyl records as a
DJ.
Johnny
has gone on to resident and guest appear at many Nightclubs on the East Coast.
Guest spots include:
New York
's Palladium, The Limelight, The Copacabana, China Club, Exit, Tavern on the
Green, and Pastels in Bay Ridge,
Brooklyn
. Red Cheetah and SoundGarden in
New Jersey
. The Edge, Coliseum and Club
Paris
in
Florida
.
In
June of 1986, Johnny left
New York
and returned to school to pursue his master’s degree in
Florida
. After spending a little time
spinning records at various clubs in
Florida
, Johnny pitched his idea of creating a mixshow to
Jacksonville
’s Top 40 radio station WAPE’s Power 95.
The program director at the time, Jeff McCartney hired Johnny to program
and mix the show. It was here that
Johnny produced his first mixshow called “The Saturday Night Power Mix” and
his career in radio mixshow was underway.
After
returning to
New York
in 1995, Johnny Rocks won a spot mixing for WKTU 103.5 FM in
New York
in 1997. KTU program director
Frankie Blue then hired Johnny to program a series of mixshows.
Johnny produced a series of special mixshows
for the 20 year reunion of the movie "Saturday Night Fever"
after which, he was given a steady slot programming and mixing the KTU “Sunday
Morning Brunch Mix." In 1998,
Johnny Rocks (along with Jellybean Benitez) also mixed the KTU “Funhouse”,
which was part of Level 1 of "KTU’s Saturday Night Dance Factory”. Johnny
also appeared mixing KTU’s "Midday Mix" with Diane Prior. In
addition, Johnny had an afternoon drive slot with Broadway Bill Lee mixing
“Broadway’s Bonus Beats” and was a regular guest DJ with Joe Causi on the
“Studio 54 Clubhouse”.
Presently,
on KTU you can hear Johnny at 12 noon Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s
and also Friday evenings from 10pm - 12 midnight.
Johnny
Rocks has a select array of Remix /
Production credits that include Dance Remixes for Madonna, Celine
Dion,
Cher
, Mariah Carey, QED, Luz Divina and Lucas Prata.
Johnny, as an artist, has just completed producing a new Italian Dance EP
due to be released in the summer of 2007, featuring Alessandra of
Naples
Italy
on vocals.
Programming
and mixing music for KTU keeps Johnny Rocks very busy.
Along with his production work and remixes he still finds time to take on
weekly guest spots in Nightclubs both in
New York
and in
Florida
. In addition, Johnny manages his
own production company, SuperStar* Productions, booking all kinds of
entertainment and organizing events.
